Mosman People Know their Antiques
When I began researching
this article I came from the point of view that, like me, many people feel ignorant and
vulnerable the minute they step in to an antique shop. Will I recognise a good piece? Will
I ignorantly pay twice the price? Will I overlook the bargain on the other table?
Apparently my fears are not
as common as I thought. Or at least, not in Mosman.
"Most people who walk
in this store have a fair idea of what prices should be," claims Mosman antique
dealer, Edmund Harvey, "This is different to the last shop we were in. They know
their stuff here [in Mosman]. They know their antiques. They know their dates, they say,
Thats a nice Georgian table, thats a nice Edwardian table. They
know exactly what it is."
So the usefulness of my
article began to diminish in my eyes. Whats the use of writing an article on antique
know-how if everyone in town has a better idea than I do? But for those who would like to
confirm their knowledge, for those who dont know as much as they pretend to know and
for those who, like me, slipped through Mosmans antique-education program, I
persisted.
